August 2018

August 2018

August’s monthly update is going to be quite short this month due to my ME. Being a fellow sufferer sometimes health gets in the way of plans so unfortunately I haven’t been able to create a proper monthly update for August. However I did still manage to send some smile presents so smiles were created 🙂

Smile presents
We sent 12 smile presents this month taking our new overall total to 620 smiles. Items included candles, art supplies, socks, fairy lights, mugs, cookbooks, body lotions and nail polish. Presents change all the time as we personalise them for each individual but they are all lovingly chosen, wrapped and posted. You can view some of the recipients on our smiles page.

Smile of the month
This month’s smile of the month is thanks to Jackie who kindly handmade and donated smile bunting. Thank you Jackie for my bunting and for the other bunting you have donated for us to include in our smile parcels.  Jackie is very talented and also created the embroidered logo some years ago which always makes me smile 🙂

Thank you’s
A huge thank you to everyone who supports us, your kindness really means a lot. A special thank you to those who have fundraised and donated money to us this month. Your generosity helps us continue to send smile presents to ME sufferers and their carers so we can’t thank you enough.

Smile presents
We sent 12 smile presents this month taking our new overall total to 608 smiles. Thank you so much for your support and for helping us create 600 smiles!

Smile For ME has been running for 6 years and it is still a small family run charity where we pride ourselves on creating smiles and brightening the days for ME sufferers and carers. We are really proud of sending 600 smiles, each one individually chosen with care, lovingly wrapped, boxed up and posted. It is very special and means a lot to run this charity and to reach 600 smiles is a huge achievement especially being fellow ME sufferers. We wouldn’t be able to do it without your support, thank you so much.

Updates
We have lovely new thank you cards designed by Kirstie. Hand drawn mandala style with our Smile For ME logo. Thank you ‘Designs by Kirstie‘.

When possible we love sending thank you cards to try and show our appreciation for your donations. We always really appreciate your kindness in supporting us and even if we can’t always send a card we are grateful and can’t thank you enough.

Smile of the month

If you have any pictures of you opening your Smile present we would love to see them! You can email them to us at smileformecharity@gmail.com or send them to us on our social media facebooktwitter or instagram.

Shop of the month
This months shop of the month is slightly different, not recommending a shop run by an ME sufferer but instead books written by ME sufferers who are sharing their stories to raise awareness and let you know you are not alone.

Complied by Pippa, Dear Chronic Illness features a collection of short letters collaboratively written by 16 young people, addressed to their conditions. It was important to us that the letters avoided being your typical sob stories or fuel for misguided ‘inspiration’, and instead they provide a light-hearted and humorous commentary on each of the writers’ various experiences, whilst also aiming to give insight into the challenges of navigating life whilst living with chronic ill-health.

Congratulations Pippa and all involved in publishing your book Dear Chronic Illness. It is available to buy on Amazon as an ebook and paperback.

From a darkened world, bound by four walls, a young woman called Jessica tells the tale of her battle against the M.E Monster. The severest form of a neuro immune disease called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis went to war with her at just 15 years old. From beneath her dark glasses, Jessica glimpses a world far different from the one she remembers as a teenage school girl. This true story follows her path as she ends up living in hospital for years with tubes keeping her alive. This harrowing story follows the highs and lows of the disease and being hospitalised, captured through her voice activated technology diary called `Bug’ that enables her to fulfil her dream of one day becoming an author. It provides a raw, real-time honesty to the story that would be impossible to capture in hindsight.

Congratulations on publishing your book Jessica. A Girl Behind Dark Glasses is available directly through Jessica’s website as well as Amazon as an ebook and paperback

Thank you so much to everyone at Bear Hugs for helping us thank the amazing carers for all they do.Sending lots of love to all carers. You are all amazing people doing an amazing job. Smile of the month
This month’s smile of the month is in relation to the shop of the month, I received my order of these two amazing pieces of art work thanks to Sarah. First the Smile For ME logo with floral detail as I love flowers and a pet portrait of my dog Rosie. Thank you for making me smile Sarah.

What has made you smile this month?

Shop of the month
This month’s shop of the month run by Sarah and she sells hand painted pet portraits & illustrations on her Etsy page. Here’s more about Sarah and her shop in her own words.

Helloooo lovelies, my name is Sarah and I live in London. I have been ill with M.E/Lyme disease/POTS since my teens, which meant I had to leave school at 16 and haven’t been able to work or study since. This has been heart-breaking for me as I loved school and love the sense of achievement and productivity. Since then I have continued to develop my passion for all things creative, using it as a form of escapism and relaxation, and also a way to bring back a sense of productivity and achievement to my days.

People would regularly tell me to try and start selling my artwork, so eventually I set up my own etsy store to try and turn my passion into my own little business. It’s difficult to spread the word about my business when I am so limited on energy and spend so much of my time at home, so social media and word of mouth have been my main forms of advertising; and why I am particularly grateful to be Smile For ME’s shop of the month.

I am a massive animal lover (particular favourites are my 2 adorable king Charles spaniels) which led me to start doing pet portraits to celebrate other people’s love for their pets too. My custom pet portraits make fabulous gifts for any animal lover in your life or a pawfect treat for yourself. Each painting is handmade and based on your specifications so they are all completely unique.

I also do custom illustrations and am open to any ideas you may have. Just send me a message and we can design a unique piece of artwork for you. Every time I sit down to paint or draw a commission I feel so incredibly lucky to get paid to do something I adore. To be able to earn money for myself for the first time has been such a lovely boost of confidence and self-esteem. I’m so grateful for all the support in helping turn my passion into a business that is manageable for me and am excited to see where this venture leads me.

You can find me on Instagram @sarah.mozer and my etsy is etsy.com/shop/sarahzoee – pop by and say hello!

Smile of the month
This month’s smile of the month is in relation to the shop of the month. I was thrilled to receive my order of an amazing smile teddy bear created by the talented Holly. Thank you for making me smile Holly!

Shop of the month
This months shop of the month is Handmade by Holly. Holly makes personalised memory bears, hearts and cushions. Here’s more about Holly and her shop in her own words. Hello, I’m Holly 😊 I started Handmade by Holly in the summer of 2016 when I could feel my health deteriorating and I was trying to accept that I was going to have to leave my part time job.

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Joint Hypermobility Syndrome, Scoliosis, IBS and Anxiety back in 2011 during my first year at University when I was studying English and Creative Writing. I managed to finish my degree, but my health got a lot worse over those 3 years and I then spent a couple of years doing some blogging and working part time in fashion retail.

Textiles had been my favourite subject at school, but for a variety of reasons I ended up taking more ‘academic’ subjects for my A-Levels and Degree, so I had a few years where I forgot how much I loved sewing. I started Handmade by Holly one Saturday afternoon when I’d been looking on Pinterest for some craft inspiration ahead of our wedding. I experimented with a variety of products over the next year, and then when we got married we were given a John Lewis gift voucher from my husbands boss and James kindly said I could use it towards a sewing machine 😊

I spent 2 weeks making 13 practice teddy attempts whilst I trialled different patterns/sewing techniques/sizes etc and I ended up making my own teddy template as I couldn’t find one I was completely happy with. I designed my bears so they will sit nicely on a shelf or a bed/chair as a precious keepsake (although beary hugs are always welcome too hehe!) and I make each part of the teddy separately so I can include several different items of clothing per bear to capture lots of special memories.

Running my business through Instagram has enabled me to create a job where I can work from home, but I still get to ‘meet’ and socialise with lots of different people online which helps my mental health a lot as it can get quite lonely being at home on my own so much. It’s so inspiring to have discovered other spoonies (like lovely Alice) who are still managing to achieve things around managing their health ❤ I’m very lucky that working from home has helped me to adapt my life and learn to pace myself better so my illnesses are more manageable now.

Handmade by Holly has been the biggest silver lining for me these last couple of years as my life plan had to change a fair bit when I was diagnosed. To feel like I’ve achieved something and to get to chat to such lovely people along the way makes my heart burst 🙂

You can find me at www.handmadebyhollyshop.com / Instagram: @handmade_byholly / Facebook: @handmadebyholly4

Please check out www.handmadebyhollyshop.com and show your support to Holly.

Shop of the month
This month’s shop of the month is Buzz & Bear a crystal and stones jewellery Etsy shop run by Laura. Here’s more about Laura and her shop in her own words.Hello! 💛

I’m Laura, Pug mother and owner of little Etsy shop, BUZZandBEAR. A home for jewellery, crystals and stones!

I was diagnosed with M.E. 10 years ago, (POTS and HSD have also joined me too along the way!). Throughout ‘better’ health periods I studied Law, and worked full time at an Accountants. And throughout not so better health periods, I was completely bedridden.

Not being in any physical state to even stand up (let alone work a ‘normal’ job), I was in a place unfortunately I’m sure you know. I wanted something to occupy my mind and be a focus – I could lay in bed and think about what I might call my shop, imagine what sort of things I could create, how i’d write the listing, anything.

Then at the start of this year, BUZZandBEAR was born!

Choosing the name BUZZandBEAR wasn’t hard at all, naturally my two handsome boys had to be involved! (See how gorgeous they are! Although I may be biased…). I think my favourite pieces at the moment are the ‘EDS’ Zebra Stone pendants – a special one for the super spoonies!

I’m so excited to be Smile For ME’s Shop of the Month! I have been so truly overwhelmed with the support and kind words I’ve received – I am very proud to be a part of the spoonie community!

Sending you all the spoons in the world,

Keep going,

Laura x

All the items pictured and more are available to buy on her Etsy page which can be found at etsy.com/shop/BUZZandBEAR. Laura has kindly given a special discount code SMILEFORME for 10% off. Please check it out and show your support to Laura.

Shop of the month
The shop of the month this month is a vegan online bakery called Piece of dough run by Katie. Here’s more about Katie and her shop in her own words. I’m Katie. I became ill with ME when I was 12 years old, which meant I missed the majority of school. After school I tried my hardest to make college work for me but it was too difficult and I left feeling like I would never be able to work, I had already been stuck in my house for 6 years and I couldn’t see that ever changing. After becoming ill with another condition in 2015, my stomach stopped working, I spent months trying to find things that I could eat that wouldn’t cause a flare and in that time I became passionate about cooking and baking and it became the only thing I found joy in. That’s when I figured I could possibly make a job for myself, I loved baking, other people loved eating the things I baked and it was something I could do from home in my own time, so I set up Piece Of Dough. I started out just delivering cupcakes locally and this year I opened up my website (www.pieceofdough.co.uk) where I can now send baked goods all around the UK. I am so thankful to be able to do this despite being ill and for once feel excited for my future.

Please check out Piece Of Dough www.pieceofdough.co.uk and show your support to Katie.

Shop of the month
The shop of the month this month is an Etsy shop called SunshineMakesShop which is run by Hannah. Here’s more about Hannah and her shop in her own words.

I’m Hannah and was teaching in Dubai when I became ill and had to return home. After over a year of tests and dead ends I was finally diagnosed with ME in 2016. I lost all my independence and felt totally lost until I decided to use my creative skills to start a very small craft and cakes business that I can control and manage around my better days. That’s when SunshineMakesShop and SunshineMakesandBakes started and it’s been a lifeline. I also have alopecia so turned a dream into reality and wrote my first children’s book called ‘Where’s Your Hair, Hannah?’ Which was published in December 2017 and is available on Amazon. I try to find the positives in every day and make my own sunshine when all there seems to be is darkness.

All the items pictured and more are available to buy on her Etsy page which can be found at etsy.com/SunshineMakesShop. Please check it out and show your support to Hannah.

Many M.E sufferers aren’t able to work due to their health but some people run online shops from their home/bed so we would love to be able to help support M.E sufferers business in a small way by shining a light on their shop. If you have a online shop you can recommend to us, run by an M.E suffer or carer please email us at smileformecharity@gmail.com with the information and it may be used in a following month.
